Any one who wants to use the Electron Microscopes must be trained and tested by a facility staff member on the Tecnai Spirit before he/she is authorized to run the microscope independently, and they will become a restricted user.
Any one who wants to use the Tecnai F30 must complete at least 10 hrs of use on the Tecnai Spirit, and then will be trained and tested by a facility staff member before he/she is authorized to run the microscope as a restricted user.
A user must complete 20 hrs of use on the Tecnai Spirit to gain after hour privileges (Standard user).
For the Tecnai F30, a user must complete a minimum of 10 hrs on the Spirit, and 10 hrs on the F30 before gaining after hour privileges (Standard user).
Restricted users are allowed to use the microscope from 9 am to 5 pm on Monday through Friday. Standard and higher level users are allowed to use the microscope at any time.
Refresher training on the use of the microscope is free, please contact the director to schedule this appointment.
After the training, the user will be assigned a user account with the user name in the format of M-N, where M is the user's name and N is his/her supervisor's last name, and with a password at the user's choice.
All standard safety rules for chemical and electrical laboratories must be observed at all times.
Always keep the EM lab clean.
Access to the microscope can be obtained through reservation. Each user can reserve no more than two sessions in advance. Each session can be up to four hours, depending on the complication of experiments. However, users are allowed to work longer if the time immediately after their sessions is not reserved by others.
The FEI engineer has the priority to reserve time for service purpose. He is allowed to cancel reservations by any user without notifying the user (users can check this from News and the Reservation sheet).
Cancellation of reserved sessions must be made at least four hours in advance or the users will still be charged for the time they reserved.
A reservation which is not taken in half an hour would be cancelled and be available to other users.
To prevent users, who does not use the microscope frequently, from causing damage to the microscope, any user that has been inactive for 3 months will have their account suspended, and will have to contact the director to have it restored, and schedule a mandatory refresher training and evaluation (which would be free).
If a user damages a piece of equipment, the user may be billed to repair or replace the item. This includes, but is not limited to: Microscope rods or Damage caused to the Microscope due to user error (i.e. vacuum crashes caused by improperly removing or inserting the rod into the microscope, etc).
Report any problem encountered when running the microscope in the log book. Notify a facility manager ASAP if the problem is serious (e.g., vacuum crashed, computer corrupted).
Users that cause any damage will have all their privileges suspended, until they can demonstrate the ability to use the microscope properly.
The file storage computer in the EM Facility is only for transferring and temporarily storing experimental results. Users are requested to remove their data from the computer ASAP. Data older than two months will be deleted by the facility managers without notifying the owners.
All users are responsible for their own TEM specimens. Specimens left in a specimen holder will be discarded by the next user.
